Reducing Humidity Corrosion with Natural Ventilation Systems

The current weather conditions, how hot or cold the surrounding air is, determines the amount of humidity in the air. The moisture in the air increases as the temperature increases. This, of course, then encourages bacteria and fungi to thrive and can cause corrosion on and in buildings.

Hot, moisture-laden air is buoyant and will accumulate in the roof space of a building, leading to significant condensation.

This condensation can be controlled:

2. Through proper ventilation and insulation will cut down on humidity and moist air gathering in high spaces

Reducing humidity with cross flow and stack ventilation systems

Cross flow ventilation provides an easy way to remove hot and humid air from building spaces. The effective use of doors, windows and louvres (including louvre doors, window louvres, and aluminium louvers), allows air to move through the building, removing stagnant air and relieving the discomfort of humidity.

Even better is to have the hot and humid air moved out of the building with the use of ridge ventilators, whirlybird roof vents, high level louvers, like roof louvers and gable vents. This along with inlet air sources allows air movement in and out.

As high level louvres allow hot moist air to exit up high, stack ventilation also reduces the build up of hot, moist air and prevents the possibility of structural corrosion.

Maintaining occupant comfort with effective ventilation systems and insulation

Buildings with large temperature differences to the outside temperature and humidity may be more detrimental for people who have to regularly move in and out of these buildings. Residents can then maintain a level of comfort while cutting energy use and costs.

More and more building designers are using mixed mode or hybrid ventilation systems to reap the benefits of natural and mechanical air-flow. Linking operable louvers and ventilators to mechanical ventilation allows for better air management for the comfort of residents in all climates.
